Hey everyone, I need some advice from people who still use classic JVC head units. I recently bought an old car for trips to the countryside, and it has a JVC KD-R335 installed. It looks fine, but there’s one issue: when I connect my phone via the front AUX input, the sound is really dull, like it’s coming from a barrel.

I tried going through the menu to find the equalizer, but there are so many abbreviations that it’s impossible to figure out without help where exactly to adjust mids and bass separately instead of just using the presets. Maybe someone remembers the button combination to set up a proper user EQ mode, because the factory “Rock” or “Jazz” settings don’t work for me at all. Also, is there any way to reduce the brightness of the button backlight? At night it’s honestly distracting while driving, and in the menu I only managed to find the clock settings, which was already a bit of a struggle.

The old JVC units are practically indestructible, but the menus are definitely an acquired taste, especially for those used to touchscreens. Regarding the AUX sound, first check the input level. In the settings, you should see an Adjust option. Click that, and you can boost or balance the line-in volume however you like. You can also look at the service manual for JVC KD-R335, KD-R336 here, on ManualMachine website. On the pages for sound settings, it clearly explains how to access the manual for changing the bass, middle, and treble. And for the backlight, check the same manual under the Display section - there should be a Dimmer function. Hey, does your unit still read discs properly?
