1. The theme actually uses the latest version of "classic" Font Awesome which is 4.7. The newer version is a completely rewritten product that uses a completely new approach & methods. A switch would affect a good deal of websites running on North which is why we're not doing the update. And that's why WPBakery Page Builder is not updating it, too.
2. This can be done by altering the theme's code. However, I think the easiest way would be to replace one of the existing FA icons. If you have an SVG version of your icon and would be fine with replacing one of the existing North icons then I can provide you with a CSS snippet that does the job! Just send me the SVG icon that you want to use and the location on your website where you'd like to place it.

1 - How can I update Font Awesome to the most recent version?
2 - How can I add my own custom icon font library?
