Found the reason: it's created by the plugin "WP GDPR Compliance".
Can you please verify if this a incompatabilty with the Theme? The plugin is beeing left active on my blog. In my other themes this plugin is not makting any trouble.
I want/need to use this (or an alternative) plugin for beeing compatible with the EU-DSGVO / GPRD.
You need to contact your theme developer as this is an issue with your theme. We do not add any styling via our plugin, this is to prevent any clashes.

Ok, I just thought no other theme has this problem so it might be an issue within Engage.

just found out, that it’s NOT been fixed on mobile view. My iPhone still shows the star in the featured image. All caches have been cleared.

Ok, think I've found it!....
Try this CSS:
.post-comments .required:after{display:none;}That should remove the small blue asterisk.
Add the CSS to the Theme Options > Advanced > Custom CSS Styling box
