I want to change the background color which is visible in the breadcrumb area and other places on the site (see screen shot). (I have selected the dark option but I don't want black as the background color). Please can you advise.

Well, that specific area you're pointing (Page Title with backgrounds) can be fully customized in Theme Options / Page Title tab:
